I haven't taken photos in a while except for some self-portraits but I've already shown some of those... I want to share something different, and not old work. I'll try to work on taking new stuff next week.

Federico Erra

Federico Erra is a young Italian photographer. He primarily takes photos of somewhat unusual yet beautiful models, as well as doing self-portraits. Erra says he is inspired by Diane Arbus.

I love Erra's photos because they are dreamy and romantic, yet edgy. His work often evokes a vintage feel and he has an excellent sense of color and light. There is a real sensitivity to his work.

Wig Self-Portraits

Here are a few self-portraits I have done wearing a blue wig (which I bought at a grocery store for $4 around Halloween time). I have loved playing dress-up ever since I was a little girl. I also used to do some acting, just for fun, but gave that up a long time ago now. I guess this is my new way of expressing those parts of me. I share these to explain why I chose to talk about Cindy Sherman's work yesterday.

Cindy Sherman

Today I'd like to share the work of one of my favorite photographers, Cindy Sherman. She's famous for taking photos of herself, but they aren't merely self-portraits. In her Untitled Film Stills series, she started off portraying herself as a blonde actress by dressing up and wearing a wig; later in the series she also plays other parts, portraying various female steretypes. Sherman began taking these in 1977 when she was 23 years old.

My name is Janna. I recently graduated from college in MA where I studied Studio Art and English. Now I'm back living at home in CT with my parents, cat, and dog. I love all the arts, especially digital photography/collage and creative writing. I'm also a big film and TV fan. I expect to use this blog mostly to post my photos, but also for any thoughts, experiences, or interesting links I feel like sharing, including my own inspirations. I especially appreciate any comments and discussion on your part. The title of this blog, "Pretty Things," comes from the name of a song by Rufus Wainwright, my favorite musical artist.
